Flash Hiders, Muzzle Breaks and Compensators!
There are many muzzle devices out there. Flash suppressors (aka flash hiders), muzzle breaks and compensators can be confusing but all have some differences in design and performance that shooters can benefit from depending on their needs.
Flash hiders:
Flash hiders literally “hide” or guard the shooter from the visible flash that occurs from unburned gunpowder. This can be useful for night shooting as it allows the shooter to preserve their night vision while also hiding the flash signature that can be visible others. Flash hiders typically are 1 of 2 design, the most popular a 3 or 4-pronged variety or a birdcage design, see examples below:

Flash hiders are great for anyone planning on a lot of low light conditions, just beware that some jurisdictions have laws against flash hiders as well as minimum overall barrel lengths however, so always consult a professional gunsmith before making any modifications to ensure legality.
Compensators:
Compensators push the expelled hot gases through top vents to create a downward force to counter muzzle rise. General studies show a range in reduction from 10% to 50% depending on the gun and compensator. Many competition shooters opt for a muzzle break or compensator for the improved accuracy and faster follow up shots. These are typically install on handguns.
Muzzle Brakes:
Muzzle brakes reduce felt recoil by venting gases to the side, top and bottom. According to Field and Stream, “Most muzzle breaks will cut recoil by 50 percent.” This makes many hunting rifles bearable and more accurate. They can also improve accuracy by stripping the gases from behind the projectile after it leaves the muzzle.
