Do you have a laser or light, or possibly even both on your firearm? Many shooters do and are reaping the benefits of the ever-changing technology in newer, lightweight and brighter lasers and lights. But, before we get into the benefits of them, let’s bust some popular laser myths!
#1: Using a Laser will give away your position!
BUSTED! We can blame Hollywood for this one! Using a laser will NOT give away your position with a laser beam as we have all seen in the movies!
#2: Using a laser will degrade your ‘proper’ shooting skills.
BUSTED! Knowing how to use iron sights is still important when learning the fundamentals, however lasers have been shown as a tool to help new shooters learn trigger control and sight alignment.
With that out of the way let’s get into some benefits of both:
Lasers are ultimately an aiming aid used to help the shooter put shots on a target quickly in a stressful situation such as self-defense scenario. It allows the shooter to have a definite aiming point with a green or red dot. Lasers are most commonly found on self-defense guns, and if are not factory, they can be added relatively easily with aftermarket parts. Lasers can be placed on accessory rails, inside guide rods, on the rear sight, and the most common-placed on the grips. These options typically have no holster impact as new technology is making these add-ons smaller and more user friendly. Lasers can be operated with a push button or can be automatically activated when the shooter’s hand is on the grip.
Lights also act as an aiming aid by illuminating in a low, no light situation. A mounted light allows the shooter to keep both hands on the gun, or have a free hand if needed while not sacrificing light. Lights clearly identifies targets as a shoot or no shoot and also illuminates surroundings. Lights also act as a blinder to a threat if a high enough lumen and many offer a strobe light effect to aid in this. Lights can be mounted on an accessory rail or directly to the frame via trigger guard on handguns and can be gun specific.
A variety of laser/light combos are also available and offer the shooter options, which in a time of stress is an added advantage. There are also a variety of lasers and lights for rifles and shotguns that can be mounted on rails or even as complete replacement handguards. The possibilities are really endless as are the benefits to adding a laser or light to your firearm!
